A promotion for the general who became known as the last U.S. soldier out of Afghanistan was approved by the Senate after a Republican senator briefly delayed the vote.

The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed the promotion of Army Lieutenant General Christopher Donahue, who had been a commander in Afghanistan during the U.S. withdrawal, after it was briefly blocked by a Republican senator.

On Monday, the Senate confirmed General Donahue’s promotion to four stars, or general. A decorated former Delta Force commander, Army Ranger and paratrooper with multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, he will now lead U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa as the war in Ukraine heads into its fourth year.

An Army general who oversaw the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan was promoted to a four-star officer after a Republican senator dropped a hold on his nomination.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R.-Okla.) last month had put on hold the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue to four-star general.

Donahue, who was a Lt. General at the time, is considered the last person to leave Afghanistan during the disastrous withdrawal in the summer of 2021.

The promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, an officer who oversaw the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, to become a four-star general and lead the Army in Europe and Africa was excluded from a bundle of military promotions approved by the Senate.
