The settlement is one of the largest in the United States for Catholic dioceses in bankruptcy because of the clergy sex abuse scandal.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre will begin making payments to nearly 600 victims of child sex abuse. The settlement marks the largest diocese bankruptcy deal in the U.S.

A bankrupt Long Island Catholic diocese received court approval for a bankruptcy plan that settles sex abuse litigation for more than $320 million, a significant milestone for the eighth largest Catholic diocese in the country.

The case, which dates back to 2019, impacts roughly 600 alleged sex abuse victims across 134 parishes on Long Island dating back decades.

A Roman Catholic diocese in Long Island, New York received court approval on Wednesday for a bankruptcy settlement that will pay more than $320 million to 600 sex abuse survivors who have said they were abused by priests when they were children.

The parishes also will briefly declare bankruptcy at the end of the proceedings, which have gone on for more than four years, officials said. The Diocese of Rockville Centre said the bankruptcies will not affect the operations of the 134 Catholic parishes in Nassau and Suffolk counties or force any to close.

As previously reported, funding for the settlement would come from entities including the diocese, parishes, other related entities and insurance companies.
