Inmate deaths in Tarrant County have exceeded the national average in each of the last four years, according to National Institutes of Health data. In the last year, Tarrant County has spent more than $2 million to settle lawsuits related to the jail. Commissioners approved a record-breaking settlement in May.

Officials are investigating the death of a 51-year-old Tarrant County Jail inmate who reported feeling sick Monday before he was taken to the hospital. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office announced the in-custody death in a news release on Tuesday.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate has passed away. Monday the 51-year-old told staffers he wasn’t feeling well. The medical staff checked him out and put him in an ambulance.

Since Tarrant County sheriff Bill Waybourn took office in 2017, 65 people have died while in custody at the county’s jail.

The Sheriff's Office said a 51-year-old inmate told jail staff he wasn't feeling well. Before an ambulance could arrive, he became unresponsive. Emergency crews were able to revive him, and he was taken to JPS Hospital where he later died.
