Three people were killed as protesters opposing a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque here clashed with security personnel on Sunday. The protesters tried to torch vehicles and pelted stones at the police who used tear gas and batons to disperse the mob.

Officials said that they are working with local representatives and influential members of society to help restore peace in the district

The BJP on Sunday took a swipe at the opposition over the violence in Sambhal, alleging that the “ghamandia alliance” has been trying to stoke unrest since the Lok Sabha poll results but it will not succeed.

Akhilesh Yadav alleged several injuries in the Sambhal violence and questioned the need for a second mosque survey when one had already been conducted.
