South Korea’s ruling party has thrown its support behind attempts to impeach embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol over his ill-fated decision to declare martial law that sparked a political crisis and widespread public anger in the country.

South Korea's police chief became the latest top official to be arrested, Yonhap news agency said on Wednesday, in a widening investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law that has plunged the country into a constitutional crisis.

On Saturday, the initial impeachment effort failed after Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the session, preventing quorum to hold the vote. To impeach Yoon, at least 200 of the parliament's 300 lawmakers must vote in support of the move. The ruling party holds 108 seats in the legislative body.
