AT&T has announced a new feature called Internet Backup that will automatically switch from a home’s wired internet to a cellular connection through a nearby smartphone should its fiber service experience a disruption.

AT&T is rolling out a new wireless service that its customers should neither expect nor want to use: a free Internet Backup for its fiber-optic residential broadband. Announced Monday, this promises an automatic cutover from a speedy wired connection to AT&T’s wireless network,

AT&T has annoucned a new feature which uses AT&T's wireless network to provide a backup home internet in the event of a fiber outage.

But now, there are lots of options, with wireless carrier services being able to pick up the slack with phones offering tethering and mobile hotspot functionality. With that said, AT&T is introducing a new service that will allow its home internet users to stay online even when fiber services go offline.
