A volcano erupted in southern Iceland, near the town of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon spa, marking the region's seventh eruption in a year.

A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted on Wednesday night, becoming the seventh such event in the area since December.

Air travelers heading into Reykjavík were treated to an arresting view on Thursday evening. This video captured from an Icelandair flight shows the ongoing eruption of a volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

Though the eruption is “significantly smaller” than the last eruption, experts said the latest volcanic activity can still “cause problems.”

The repeated volcanic eruptions close to Grindavík have damaged infrastructure and property and forced many residents to relocate to guarantee their safety.
