I'm a big history buff and excited to make Museum Island a big highlight in my upcoming trip to Berlin. I'm trying to get my head around how much time to allocate to each for planning purposes. Are all of the museums a similar size? Or are some much smaller than others? I'm more familiar with museums like the British Museum and the Metropolitan, so trying to gauge my expectations of time needed based on the couple of days I spent at each of those.

The museums are very manageable, it is the reservation and ticketing that is such a hassle. I felt the Egyptian museum was the best; the Pergamom is going through renovations right now but is a strong second. However, due to the bureaucratic overtures of the reservation system, do not try to schedule them in one day. They are inflexible with time slots and try to print EVERYTHING, prior to going to the museums. This was the only place in Berlin that was user-unfriendly though. Even the Germans made fun of them.

We didn’t go in the museums either. We did walk around the outside of some of them. There are loads of boat trips that travel past the museums and think that would be a good compromise. Enjoy your visit. A great city to see. Find forget to book the Reichstag in advance. That is brilliant.

I will be in Berlin from October 14th to 20th. Which parts of the museum will be closed? The Pergamon mus, The temple of Ishtar? Are the Ancient Near East galleries open? How about Old National galery and Old (Greek, Roman, Etruscan art) museum? The info about what is and is not open is very murky. I appreciate your help.

It’s hard for me to answer about the days and time. In Germany, this was one of two things that I critically didn’t like: the wild disorganization of sights (several places on the same network on a single ticket can work on completely different days, and they won’t tell you about it). So here I am not an adviser. ... I agreed to answer the question on another occasion: I advise on the "museum island" to ask about such a thing as a brochure with all the museums and addresses, and they can tell you about such a tourist ticket like... there is something like 3 days to ALL museums of Berlin for 33 euros.
