The mountain is near Grundarfjordur, a teensy-weensy town in west Iceland. With a summit 1,500 feet above sea level, Mount Kirkjufell the biggest …

This is a must see when visiting Iceland. The mountain itself has a unique "pointy hat" shape and looks different from different angles. The small waterfalls in front of it are also quite beautiful, … Full review by Karim M

the picture of kirkjufell mountain on the background of the waterfall is a perfect end picture of the tour to sneaflesnes peninsula and whole iceland. Full review by מוטי ל
Hi Jonna. I'm going to be in Iceland and am thinking of hiking around Kirkjufell. I don't think I'm up for climbing to the top as it seems a bit treacherous. Do you know if there are good trails around the mountain and where info about these trails might be? Thanks! Steve

There is a good path from the town centre, it'll take you past a lovely waterfall close to the mountain. and the follow the path around the base.
I'm heading over that way in February how is the hike to the falls in the winter?
A:
It really depends upon the weather but certainly not as easy as in the Summer. It being Winter, you'll want to dress appropriately for the cold and winds, and possibly snow.
Hello, we are going to be visiting here next Summer. My husband is ex mountain rescue and we are both fairly experienced walkers. We will also have our two kids 10&11. We have done a few hilly walks in Scotland with them but nothing involving ropes. We would love to climb this mountain as part of our trip. Would like to know if this would be possible? Can we hire a guide for the trip and how much would this cost (GB) thank you

Hello Fiona, as far as I know the mountain is closed to the public (there were barriers when we visited) because it's quite dangerous. However, you can hire a guide for a trip to the top - at least that's what the Lonely Planet said. We didn't stay long enough to consider climbing to the top.
Hello: I was wondering if it is possible to walk/hike to the mountain and the falls from the town? How far is it from the center of town?

Yesterday, I hiked from the dock past city center after getting off a cruise ship via tender. It was on the order of 2.5 to 3 miles to the base of the church mountain which is a few hundred meters from the parking lot for the falls. I did not take the most direct route, but was not far off. The climb is moderate, but gets more challenging near the top with three ropes to help you navigate - bring gloves for the rope. The falls are probably 1/4 mile off the road in the opposite direction. With the climb to the top, my round trip was nearly 5 hours, including a good deal of photo taking, but I did not walk out to the falls area to get a closer look. I would plan on 6 hours if you want to go to the falls and do the climb, probably three if you just go to the base of the mountain. After returning I was told by family that went out the cruise sponsored excursions, that someone died the week before. I don't know if it was a local or a tourist. So be warned, this is not for the feint of heart and comes with real risk. There is also a nice church and statue near town center that I visited briefly on my way back. I also had an Icelandic sub at a food truck - the of course sold the famous Icelandic fried hot dogs as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but be careful if you decide to do this. It's recommended to have s guide, but our cruise did not offer this, probably for liability reasons.
