Off the beaten track along a long party gravel road (at times narrow) with glorious views, animals roadside included horses. Parking and toilet facilities are decent. Steep climb, but solid steps, an… Full review by Jenny L

It's quite a drive from Gisborne if you want to see the sun rise so get up early and allow extra time. Full review by pennyk839

Hi, We will be visiting East Cape Lighthouse in October 2017. Are there any tours out to the lighthouse or is it just self drive. Don't particularly want to drive that road before sunset. I know there is a DOC campsite along the road somewhere. Appreciate your advice. Thank you.

No tours that I'm aware of. It's not a place tourists visit often due to long drive - only 1% of all tourists drive the coast road from Opotiki to Te Araroa where road to lighthouse is. The single lane road in is narrow and gravel in parts with blind corners so need to drive slowly with care and be aware livestock are also loose. The achievement of being at NZ's most eastern point after climbing up the 700 - 800 sleeper steps and the view on a clear day make it worthwhile. To see sunset or sunrise you'll need to stay in the area. Some camp on the road in - seaview is great. A wonderful isolated area of NZ.

Note above that East Cape Lighthouse is "Ranked #1 of 72 Attractions in Gisborne Region". Gisborne is a city, but is also a large region. Or at least TripAdvisor demarcates the area as a region called Gisborne. New Zealand doesn't have definite political divisions like English counties. What are you complaining about anyway? If you can use the internet, you can use Google Maps to calculate distances.

It would be a whole day out but there are other attractions along the way - including a very long wharf. There are a few eateries but they are fairly basic. There is a nice manuka honey place just beyond the little town where you turn off to the cape. To get right to the cape there is about 10 kms of good gravel road and then a half to one hour steep walk up to the lighthouse
